Corrales, NM – Music in Corrales has pledged $10,000 to support the restoration of the historic Old San Ysidro Church—home to Music in Corrales concerts for 39 years. Half the gift—$5,000—is a challenge grant to encourage new donations to the Corrales Historical Society’s ROCK (Restore Old Church Kindly) Fund, inspiring others to join in preserving this community treasure.

BACKGROUND

The Old San Ysidro Church is owned by the Village of Corrales, but the Corrales Historical Society is responsible for its operation and maintenance. Originally, the restoration project focused on replastering the Church’s interior walls. Funded by a $290,000 state grant, work began earlier this summer, but once the old plaster was removed, significant structural and electrical issues were discovered.

To address the unforeseen issues, the Village of Corrales agreed to provide an additional $200,000 for the project and the Corrales Historical Society has provided $35,000 from its existing ROCK Fund. The additional work required now presents a unique opportunity to install air conditioning and a new heating system in the Old Church, making it a more comfortable environment for year-round use. Together with donations from the community, the $10,000 gift from Music in Corrales will help fund this additional upgrade.

“The Old Church is the heart of Corrales history and culture,” said Music in Corrales President John Schumann. “The power of music helps strengthen the social fabric of our community, so we have taken this step to reaffirm our commitment to the people of Corrales and to the historic Old San Ysidro Church.”
