Showered with superlatives by critics for his passionate artistry and amazing technique, the brilliant American pianist Thomas Pandolfi returns to Music in Corrales by popular demand after his exciting performance in our series last year. His programs feature not only beloved classical masterpieces, but also familiar works by modern masters from George Gershwin to Andrew Lloyd Webber. The Washington Post described him as an artist who is “master of both the grand gesture and the sensual line.”

Adrian Legg – Fingerstyle Guitar

Adrian Legg is an English guitar player who has been called “impossible to categorize.” He plays custom guitars that are a hybrid of electric and acoustic, and his fingerstyle technique has been highly acclaimed. He plays a mix of bluegrass, Cajun, and country, and talks with the audience between songs, delivering homespun witticisms mixed with bits of his eccentric philosophy to set an atmosphere for his music and to convey the personal experience behind a particular song.

After her sold-out performance in Rio Rancho last year, world-renowned violinist Midori personally selected this rising, award-winning classical ensemble to perform for us in our 30th Anniversary season as a Partners in Performance Young Artist Recital at the Rio Rancho High School (301 Loma Colorado Blvd NE). The New York Times has praised the Lysander Piano Trio for its “rich sound and nuanced musicianship . . . [and] finely tuned collaboration.” Its members are Juilliard graduates Liza Stepanova, piano; Itamar Zorman, violin; and Michael Katz, cello.

A perennial favorite, Albuquerque native and Corrales resident Bobby Shew has had a love affair with his trumpet and jazz since the age of twelve, and has played with brilliant passion ever since. He has played with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman and others, and he has the stories to go with the music. For this concert Bobby Shew will be joined by his Trio, composed of Jim Ahrend at piano, Colin Deuble on bass, and Cal Haines on drums.

Their dynamic and energetic performances feature informative musical introductions; great ensemble chemistry; and accessible contemporary works framed by invigorating arrangements of classical music spanning four centuries. Akropolis is Tim Gocklin (oboe), Kari Dion (clarinet), Matt Landry (saxophone), Andrew Koeppe (bass clarinet), and Ryan Reynolds (bassoon).

Returning to Corrales by popular demand, Fraser & Haas once again bring their Celtic violin and cello talents to the Old Church. The musical partnership between Alasdair Fraser, long regarded as Scotland’s premier fiddle ambassador, and highly acclaimed California cellist Natalie Haas spans the full spectrum between intimate chamber music and ecstatic dance energy. After sixteen years together, they continue to thrill audiences internationally with their virtuosic playing, their near-telepathic understanding, and the joyful spontaneity and sheer physical presence of their music.

We welcome back veteran touring singer/songwriter Peter Mulvey as he continues his travels through the unlimited territory of music. Honing his musicianship, his phrasing and his ability to inhabit a song, he has come into his own, with a sound full of grit and warmth, at the same time startling and familiar. He pursues his restless search for the elusive moment when a song comes alive through the chemistry of an audience, a performer, and the song itself.

Sol y Canto has been hailed as the “sublime ambassadors of the Pan-Latin tradition.” Sol y Canto creates music and performances that move, delight, excite and connect audiences to the richness of Latin American culture and people. Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and bongo player Rosi Amador; New Mexican guitarist and composer Brian Amador; and this season, bass player Keala Kaumeheiwa return to the Music in Corrales stage with their shared experience of music, poetry, humor, and playfulness that connects us all.
